A Brief Slots TimelineThe
slot machine was invented by a mechanic in the late 1800's by the name of
Charles Fey. The original machine consisted of only three reels and twenty
symbols made up of hearts, clubs and spades, and was met with tremendous appeal.
The machine was an instant success, and was soon being called the "One Armed
Bandit", for it was never known just how much money it was taking from its naive
money-seekers. At the time, gamblers did not know how to calculate the
odds of a slot machine, which is simply multiplying the number of reels by the
number of symbols. Nowadays, slot machines contain several reels, paylines and
symbols and are governed by highly technical random number generators and payout
monitors. Fey was very protective with his homemade slot machines, and
would only rent them out to businesses willing to negotiate a 50/50 share of the
profits. Fey's first slot machine was called The Liberty Bell, which is on
display in a saloon restaurant his family operates to this day in Nevada.
Soon after the word of Fey's exciting invention got out, local gambling
parlors were housing his slots. At first, they were primarily used to
distract ladies while the men where gambling at table games in the parlor, but
soon became popular for everyone stepping foot inside to gamble. As their
popularity grew even more, slots started to be confiscated as a result of police
raids on the parlors to crack down on illegal gambling. But when gambling
was legalized in Nevada, a gangster by the name of Bugsy Seigel brought slot
machines over to the first casinos, and the rest is history. From a
mechanics garage to millions of online computers, slots have come a very long
way.
One of the most intriguing aspect's of playing slot machines in a casino is
the sights and sounds of the machine. Even in online casinos can this
excitement of slots be recreated. Slots still remain to be a game that
requires no deep intellectual thought or gambling strategy to play, but have
evolved drastically in terms of their multimedia capacity, including symbol
graphics, sound effects and miniature light shows. With some of the
largest cash jackpots known to man, slots provide a pleasant escape for many
gamblers fantasizing about hitting the big numbers - and have changed the lives
of many who have actually done just that.
Online slots have become almost as big as the real machines themselves,
providing large winnings and a vast selection of machine types and games.
Gamblers can still put in as little as a nickel, or as much as $100 per spin -
and still take home jackpots in six and even seven figures. And as online
casino software continues to evolve and be developed, online slots could
potentially become a virtual reality game bringing players together in a virtual
casino, while in reality, are relaxing in the comfort of their own home.
